It is with regret that we announce the death of Robert Richter, last January 28, in the city of Bern, Switzerland.
He was Member of the board of the International Federation of Film Societies (FICC/IFFS) since 1991 (Vice-president between 1995 and 2003, with special duties officer for archives). Organised the “International Congress on Non-Commercial Distribution of European Films” in 1993. He developed the project Discoveries, to make the distribution of Don Quijote Award winning films. In the last years, he was responsible for the FICC/IFFS Archives, in deposit at the Cinematheque Suisse in Penthaz near the city of Lausanne. He was one of top leaders of global film society movement during last three decades.
Managing Director of Cinélibre: www.cinelibre.ch (since 2001), he worked on the distribution activity and as webmaster of Cinélibre. Co-organised several tours with films from Iran, South Korea, Italy or Poland, on Alexander Kluge and British Free Cinema for cinemas and film societies; expert on Iranian cinema (pre- and post-revolutionary) since the early 90s. He presented the retrospective of Kamran Shirdel at International Festival of Film Societies at Reggio Calabria, Italy 2002.
He his author of many publications on Iranian cinema (most recently for Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung: www.bpb.de ); Curator of retrospectives (1991/92 on contemporary Iranian cinema in Germany, Switzerland and Austria); 1996 first retrospective on the history of Iranian documentary cinema (combining films from before and after the revolution in one retrospective) at the Leipzig Documentary Film Festival).
He worked as advisor and delegate for several festivals such as: San Sebastián, Berlin, Leipzig, Visions du Réel (Nyon) and others; Cinema journalist (incl. topics such as film politics and funding schemes in Europe) for Swiss and German newspapers and radio stations since 1980 (Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Der Bund, DeutschlandRadio, Filmecho / Filmwoche and many others).
Co-director of the documentary film “Moirés Movement Light” about the moiré sculptures of the Bernese artist Werner Witschi. The film was awarded the “Grand Prix de la Recherche” at the Festival international du film d’art in Paris. He participated as a Jury Member FIPRESCI at 11st Cottbus Festival of East European Cinema, 14th Fribourg International Film Festival and 34th International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg.
Recognizing his efforts in favour of film culture, we wish peace to their family and friends and express our heartfelt condolences.
A memorial ceremony for Robert will be held on Sunday 15 March in a cinema in Bern.
