2. May 10. International Public Day
The Astor Place massacre occurred on May 10, 1849 in the already demolished Astor Opera House in Manhattan and left between 22 and 31 dead, and more than 120 injured. 3. News from New Zealand
The New Zealand Federation of Film Societies (NZFFS) held its Annual General meeting over the weekend of the 14th/15th March 2023. Delegates noted that although the pandemic has posed many challenges over the last three years to film society operations and cinema going in general, this year is starting well with growth in new members and higher attendances at screenings. The number of Societies operating this year is now 15 with one new Society (Oamaru) and one Society returning after a break (Westport). Each society has a very active committee that works hard to build strong networks in their communities to spread the Film Society message.
This year’s programme has strong representation of African cinema: Mandabi, le Franc, and The Little Girl who sold the sun from Senegal, Tilai from Burkina Faso, and The Gravedigger’s Wife set in Somalia. Being well received is the documentary Honeyland from Macedonia. Whanau Marama – The New Zealand International Film Festival will be screening in 17 towns and cities throughout New Zealand from the 19th July to the 10th September 2023. This Festival commits to a strong representation from New Zealand indigenous cinema both in features and short films and is eagerly awaited.
La Federación de Cinclubes de Nueva Zelanda (NZFFS) celebró su reunión general anual durante el fin de semana del 14 y 15 de marzo de 2023.
